Liposuction involves removal of fat through inconspicuous tiny incisions using a negative pressure suction machine. The tumescent technique is the newest method in which a local anesthetic solution and large amounts of saline are injected prior to the suctioning of the fat. This allows for a safer, pain-free method. After the procedure, the loose skin will heal with the underlying muscle, thus providing some tightening effect to the skin. Ultrasonic treatment can be applied to "melt" the fat before liposuction. This is called ultrasonic liposuction. Ultrasonic liposuction helps to further tighten the loose skin.

Fat is for food storage in the body. It therefore stores in between muscle groups where muscle activities would not affect them. Exercise therefore does not affect these stubborn fat areas, such as the lower abdomen, the lower torso (love handles), thighs, buttocks, flanks and upper arms.

Stubborn fat can be easily removed with liposuction. Fat cells increase and decrease in size, not in number, so if an abnormal number of fat cells are located in an isolated area, liposuction can be helpful in contouring and shaping that area. For example, a stubborn double chin can be easily removed with liposuction. The goal of liposuction is to re-contour the body shape.
