Eyebag Surgery

An eyelid tuck is performed to correct sagging eyebrows and droopy, hooded upper lids and to eliminate bags and smooth the skin under the eyes. This is done through an incision in inconspicuous areas of the eyelid. With lower eyebag surgery [lower blepharoplasties], the excess fat of the lower eyebag can be removed from an incision within the eyelid [tranconjunctival], or removed through an incision under the eyelash particularly when removal of excessive skin is desirable.

Fat-preservation technique is the newest technique in removing eyebags and preserving youthfulness at the same time. This technique, instead of removing fat, releases the eyebag from within, spreading out the existing fat to share with the adjacent depressed area. This effect ensures a more even, rejuvenated look of the lower eyes with presence of baby fat. This procedure is longer lasting as it maintains the functional anatomy of the lower eyelid. It also saves the patient from having a fat injection of the lower eyelid for rejuvenation in the future. Currently, Dr. Wong does most of his lower eyebag surgeries with this new technique.

A standard blepharoplasty will not get rid of crow's feet or lines at the corner of the eyes. A separate procedure such as the advanced laser skin resurfacing technique or botox injection can be done to accomplish this goal at the same time or afterwards.

When there is significant sagging of the eyebrow, it is pivotal for the patient to recognize that a brow lift is necessary before the upper eyebag removal (upper blepharoplasty) is done. This will give the best results of rejuvenation. Upper blepharoplasty alone in the presence of significant brow lift will only worsen the appearance and signs of aging of the patient. Details regarding brow lift can be found in the section of forehead lift on this website.

With eyelid operations, the swelling and bruises last between two to three weeks and scars fade within four weeks. However, with make-up, the patient is usually presentable in about one week. Dark glasses are helpful for about two weeks after surgery. In addition, no contact lenses should be worn for at least a week.
